Zug Mobility 2040: Preparing for the Future of Automated Ridepooling

As cities and municipalities across Switzerland face increasing challenges in meeting growing mobility demands, the Canton of Zug is taking proactive steps to reshape its transportation infrastructure. Recognizing the need for more sustainable, efficient, and scalable mobility solutions, the canton is embracing cutting-edge technologies, focusing on energy and space-efficient systems to complement traditional public and private transportation.

In partnership with ZUG ALLIANCE, the Canton of Zug has launched a feasibility study to explore the integration of automated ridepooling vehicles into its transportation ecosystem. This project aims to assess the potential benefits and challenges of autonomous, shared mobility systems, providing a comprehensive understanding of how these solutions can support the region’s broader mobility, environmental, and urban planning goals.

The Zug Mobility 2040 initiative reflects a future-oriented approach to transportation, where space-efficient mobility solutions are prioritized alongside housing development and climate action targets. The study will specifically investigate how autonomous vehicles and intelligent algorithms can be leveraged to optimize traffic flow, reduce emissions, and make more economical use of public spaces.

Key Aspects of Zug Mobility 2040:

Energy and Space Efficiency: The study focuses on integrating forms of mobility that contribute to more efficient use of energy and urban space. Automated ridepooling offers the potential to decrease the number of vehicles on the road, reducing traffic congestion and freeing up space in urban areas.

Climate and Energy Targets: The initiative supports Zug’s climate and energy goals by encouraging the adoption of low-emission, automated mobility systems. By reducing reliance on traditional car-based transportation, the canton aims to lower carbon emissions and contribute to a more sustainable future.

Digital Innovation: With advancements in autonomous driving technologies and smart algorithms, Zug sees an opportunity to become a pioneer in Switzerland’s automated mobility landscape. The study will explore how these digital tools can be applied to optimize transportation services, providing reliable, efficient, and environmentally-friendly mobility options.

The feasibility study will be completed by spring 2025, serving as a foundational step in shaping Zug’s transportation future. By closely examining the potential for automated ridepooling, the Canton of Zug seeks to stay at the forefront of mobility innovation, addressing local mobility needs while aligning with broader environmental and housing objectives outlined in the Richtplan des Kantons Zug.

As the canton embarks on this transformative journey, the integration of automated ridepooling vehicles could serve as a model for other regions across Switzerland, contributing to a future where transportation is not only smarter but also more sustainable and aligned with the needs of modern urban life.
